In an announcement on March 13, Netflix revealed it would be debuting the first-ever animated GODZILLA movie.
The anime, titled simply GODZILLA, is being produced by Japanese studio Polygon Pictures and will be released in Japanese theaters before moving to Netflix worldwide later this year. It marks the 30th GODZILLA film to be produced by Toho Pictures, after SHIN GODZILLA last year. The film will be directed by Kobun Shizuno (KNIGHTS OF SIDONIA) and Hiroyuki Seshita (AJIN) and will be written by Gen Urobuchi (PSYCHO-PASS).
This news comes in the middle of a flurry of publicity surrounding the GODZILLA franchise. SHIN GODZILLA took seven Japan Academy Awards, including Best Picture, on March 3. More cast members such as Vera Farmiga (THE CONJURING and BATES MOTEL) have been announced for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, which comes out in 2019. Information is starting to surface about GODZILLA VS. KONG, which will be released in May 2020 and will be written by writers that worked on PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, STAR TREK BEYOND, PACIFIC RIM, and ALIEN: COVENANT, just to name a few.
The upcoming anime film’s official twitter has been releasing concept art over the past few months in anticipation of their exhibition at AnimeJapan 2017 on March 26. The twitter also announced six of the cast members: Kana Hanazawa (Anri Sonohara, DURARARA), Yuuki Kaji (Eren Jaeger, ATTACK ON TITAN), Mamoru Miyano (Light Yagami, DEATH NOTE), Takahiro Sakurai (Shogo Makishima, PSYCHO-PASS), Tomokazu Sugita (Gintoki Sakata, GINTAMA), and Junichi Suwabe (Dandy, SPACE DANDY). They did not elaborate on what characters each of the six voice actors may be playing, but they’ve promised to release more information at AnimeJapan. We’re looking forward to see what else they have in store!
